WHAT IS A DRAGON BOAT?
A large, human-powered canoe-like vessel originating in China that is decorated with an ornate dragonhead and tail. There are typically two sizes in length, standard 12 meters or 39 feet and small 9 meters or 29 ½ feet.
HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE IN A DRAGON BOAT?
A standard boat seats 20 paddlers, a drummer in the front and steersperson in the rear. A small boat seats 10 padders, a drummer and steersperson. The GCDBC has two standard and one small boat.
WHEN IS DRAGON BOAT SEASON?
On the water practices start early spring and conclude mid-October (weather permitting).
WHERE ARE TEAM PRACTICES HELD?
We practice on the Chicago River in Lincoln Park, Lake Opeka in Des Plaines and Jackson Park Inner Harbor on the city’s South Side.
WHAT DOES THE CLUB SUPPLY?
Paddle, life vest, and dragon boat.
WHAT SHOULD PADDLERS WEAR?
Remember, dragon boating is a watersport so dress accordingly—shoes that fasten and quick dry fabrics.
WHAT DO I BRING TO PRACTICE?
Water bottle, sunscreen and sunglasses. A hat is also recommended.
WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO TRY DRAGON BOAT PADDLING?
We will fit you with a vest, paddle and have you sign a waiver form. A member of our coaching staff will guide you through a short training demonstration. You’re invited to paddle two times as our guest, free of charge. Club membership is $175 per season—excluding optional race fees.
HOW LONG IS A DRAGON BOAT RACE?
Most races are 200 and 500 meters in distance. Some festivals hold a 2,000-meter competition.
WHAT IF I ONLY WANT TO PADDLE AND NOT TAKE PART IN ANY RACES?
We welcome all experience levels of paddlers and will provide opportunities that support your personal paddling goals. Anyone can join and attend practices without going to any races. We think you’ll change your mind, however.
